More than half the energy extracted from burning gasoline is lost through heat and friction. When gas prices reached its peak in mid 2008, several people are seriously wandering if they should keep their vehicle. Some have began looking for a more economical energy source such as electricity. Since a brand new electric vehicle (EV) is still relatively expensive, several car enthusiasts have started converting their gasoline driven car to electric. How practical is it to construct your own electric car at home? This article will give some information on electric car conversion from home.
<!--

The idea of constructing your own EV is to remove the internal combustion engine and replace it with a DC electric motor. Since the engine is gone, all the associated components such as radiator, fuel lines, gas tank and exhaust pipe are dismantle as well. The electric motor is connected straight to the existing transmission. To power the motor, a series of acid flooded batteries are utilised. On a full charge, the electric car is capable of traveling approximately 150 miles. The actual mileage will depend on the condition of the batteries, the power rating of the motor, the weight of the car and also the driving condition.
To fully charge the batteries, it will take about 8 hours running on a standard home power socket. During off peak hour, it will cost about $1 to charge the batteries. Imagine traveling 150 miles in your car and only costing you one buck. Compare to a conventional automobile, an electric car definitely comes up on top. From the running cost alone, building your own electric car is definitely worth considering.

Back in mid 2008, global crude oil costs reached its historical peak. That phenomenon has caused local gasoline prices to shoot through the roof. Several car owners were in dire straits due to their sudden inflated energy expense bill. Some were not able to cope and have to abandon their vehicles at home and use the public transportation. Others took a more proactive action and began sourcing for alternate energy for their cars.

One alternative power source to replace fossil fuel in our vehicle is electricity. For the time being, a new electric car from the manufacturer is still relatively expensive. Some electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts have started to convert their gasoline driven car to run on electric via a Do It Yourself (DIY) approach. Due to the high demand, there are numerous electric car conversion manuals in the market. Are these EV conversion guides worth purchasing? This article will provide some information on the subject.
The idea of an electric vehicle retrofitting is to take out the internal combustion engine and replace it with an electric motor. Since the engine is gone, all its connecting components such as gas tank, exhaust pipe, fuel lines and radiator are redundant hence they’ve to be removed as well. To supply electricity to the motor, a series of deep cycle batteries are used.
<!--

An electric car conversion process is quite complicated if you’re not familiar with automotive engineering. Most of the work involved are electrical wiring and machine tooling. No doubt an electric car conversion book will give you some guidance but you must have some hands on experience on fixing and maintaining a car to commence with. If you’re not well versed with hand tools, it’s suggested to outsource the electric car retrofitting project to a professional mechanic.
